Our Traffic Banksman (Traffic Marshal) course is designed to help avoid accidents during large vehicle manoeuvres on a construction site.
The course includes demonstrations of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standard Banksmans signals employed by banksmen (or traffic marshals) throughout the United Kingdom and Europe and guidance on how to meet legislations such as the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers have a responsibility to ensure that all workers who are required to direct vehicle movements are suitably trained and have the relevant banksman certification.
The banksman signals must be used at all times when directing vehicles, whether cars, HGVs, or any other type of vehicle.
Failure to comply with these legal training obligations could result in prosecution.
By completing this Traffic Marshal course, you will have a strong understanding of how to safely control traffic while carrying out manoeuvres and an awareness of the associated legislation. This will make you a valuable asset to any company that utilises large vehicles on their premises.
The training is ideal for anyone who may take instruction from banksmen, including delivery drivers, site operators, and contractors, so that the safe movement of vehicles and lifting operations can be achieved on-site.
This Traffic Marshal Banksman Course is an essential ticket for anyone working in construction, security, manufacturing, hospitality, parking enforcement, or anyone responsible for loading, unloading, and movement of vehicles.
Control measures such as banksmen are in place to protect pedestrians from the potential hazards posed by vehicles on or around construction sites. When banksmen are not directing traffic, they should be made aware of the safe areas to stand so that they are not in danger.
The figures reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which were published in October 2019, show that the number of deaths involving vehicles or near vehicles has risen steadily since 2013, when there were 71 such fatalities. Most accidents involved people struck by a moving vehicle, while others were caused by vehicles overturning, pedestrians being hit by reversing vehicles, or workers falling from vehicles.
The HSE's figures also show that the construction industry continues to be the sector with the highest number of fatal accidents involving vehicles, with 45 deaths reported in 2022/23.
